Unfortunately, I don’t know the theme and as it’s commercial, I can’t just download it to check….

It would help to know what theme you are using and what tutorial you followed?

Another thing occured to me – a plugin could have over-ridden the default settings.

You could try the wp-mail-smtp test with all the plugins disabled and/or list the plugins here.

The theme you are using might be an issue….

What web/email hosting do you use?

Not that I would necessarily know one from another – but someone else might!

Have you tested with the testing feature of wp-mail-smtp at the bottom of the settings screen?

If you send an email to yourself it logs the whole process, successful or otherwise. That should give a clue as to where the problem […]

Does Ordinary WordPress email work?
Some wordpress hosting requires an extra plugin to get email working, such as https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/

Try resaving your permalinks as something other than default.

And/or check your .htaccess file in the website root directory (where wp-config.php is) for a block like the following:
