I think I may have just found a way – I saved the following as a plugin myself and it works. So If you change the Case text for your own it may help – I run single site so i can’t try it out…

@DJPaul The first person to register at the site sent me a friendship request and there is no way of accepting or declining it – no buttons in /members/admin/friends/requests/ and a ‘Friendship Requested’ button in the members directory which doesn’t do anything…. Is there any easy way to remove the need to join a group before posting…. ie to not have the join groups step and just posting to the group joins it automatically – if necessary.
