I’ve just discovered that this is a known bbPress bug, and a patch has been submitted here (see “Attachments”): https://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3341
Editing bbpress/includes/extend/buddypress/notifications.php as shown has fixed the issue for me.
