    Yeah I installed them both locally using MAMP.

    I tried it again tonight and when I log in to bbpress it will log me in to buddypress, but when I log in to buddypress it doesn’t log me in to bbpress. I went in to buddypress to the forum setup tab and did the integration from an existing forum thing, but that just set up the groups forums again. I created a group and stated a forum and topic, the group appeared as a subforum on bbpress and the posts appeared there. When I posted on in it bbpress it appeared in the group on buddypress, and group posts appear on bbpress.

    I went back to the forum setup tab and it said:

    “NOTE: The forums directory will only work if your bbPress tables are in the same database as your WordPress tables. If you are not using an existing bbPress install you can ignore this message.”

    Which is something over my head, I don’t even know what a table is.

    I’ve looked into that, but all that does is rename the tab/link and the url for the component your dealing with, it won’t combine the bbpress and buddypress registrations and accounts.

    I was playing with the idea for a while to just rename “groups” to “topics” and treat them as a forum

    I don’t know if those tutorials are out dated, but when like I said when I integrated the two the other day the buddypress groups just took them over. I’m obviously going to keep looking anyways hoping I screwed something up, but I don’t know.

    If nothing else I was hoping it would consolidate the user accounts so people won’t have to log into two separate things.

    @r-a-y Like I said that doesn’t integrate it with buddypress.

    @alanchrishughes

    Yeah, but like I was saying this thread sounded like by integrating the two it would integrate the user accounts too.

    @johnjamesjacoby I was so stoked when I found this thread, thinking I finally found a way to run a normal forum but allow users to have the same log in account for buddypress and bbpress, but after I went through it all integrating the two, buddypress just shoved the forum right back into their groups.

    I started to create a child theme for WP once, but I edit things so much I am a basically creating an entirely new theme anyways so I don’t even bother. I just duplicate the default theme folder so I’m not working completely from scratch, name the folder something different, and just go to town on it. A lot of files like the stylesheet and index page I just completely wipe out.

    I had been up all night when I wrote this post, but I think what I was trying to ask was does buddypress not work the same way, where you have an actual file for each page? And instead dynamically generate each page out of scattered php? Is there not a page for activity? a page for forums? a page for groups? for the tabbed members page etc.

    I thought it may be easier to just convert one of my pre-broken down sandbox themes from wordpress and just add some extra code here and there to make it buddypress’able so I know where everything is, but I guess the only documentation for that now is to just use that new plugin converter. But the first thing it told me to do was to start editing the html, which is the opposite of what I need, so I stopped. I also stopped because the files already had the two divs and id’s it said it needed but wasn’t doing anything, I don’t know if it was a wordpress 3 glitch or what.

    @PauGibbsl so there should be a way to integrate the two so users only have to create and use one log in? And messageboard posts will show up in there activity stream also?

    @Paul Gibbs Would that be a pretty big project to create the option for a standard forum? I would help but I don’t know anything about programming.

    I tried something new last night though, I installed wordpress/buddypress on the same database as a separate bbpress installation, and then followed the bbpress instructions as much as I could to integrate it with wordpress

    https://bbpress.org/documentation/integration-with-wordpress/

    It said it was successfully integrated, but then signing into one or the other doesn’t sign me in to the other and doesn’t seem integrated at all. And I don’t know if it is a WordPress 3 problem but there was no “Secret” field in the WordPress options to enter in the bbpress integration.

    @lincme.co.uk I’m not trying to criticize them, I’m just hoping one of the things they might be working on is one of the things I am wanting. But you are saying you don’t think they are working on anything new?

    @lincme.co.uk I am assuming you are one of the people who developed or now work on Buddypress, do you know if there is going to be a forum option like I have described that is separate from groups in any up coming version? I have really been wanting to redesign a website I run http://www.parkersburgskateplaza.org using Buddypess since I first read about the software this winter, but I am almost ready to just roll with it as is and stumble through trying to explain how it works to people, but would rather wait if something simpler is in the works.

    @Peterverkooijen you keep talking about privacy

    but anyways, I’m still looking for a solution to simplify the messageboard/s system. Right now I’m looking into renaming “groups” to “topics”

    @Peterverkooijen said: I’m sorry, but the whole point of a social network is that it is not anonymous. You can’t have unregistered users on a social network. The point of a social network is to allow members to interact with eachother in a trusted environment like they would in the offline world

    You just described email.

    I’ve never understood the whole privacy freak out problem. Ever since facebook started getting big I hear about it all the time. But it is stupid, if you don’t want information or photos of yourself on the internet, don’t put them on the internet, and especially don’t turn around and try to blame the website you put it on.

    I can follow all their instructions to the point it says to run the script to your server: msgfmt -o buddypress-mysite.mo buddypress-mysite.po
    using terminal if you are on a mac. I know what terminal is but I don’t really know what it does or how it works and from what I always understood it is something that effects your own computer, not something you do web design with.

    @alanchrishughes

    I went through the .po file and that had no effect, and when I open the .mo file it just says

    @alanchrishughes

    Participant

    So open the .pot with POEDIT, save it as .po and .mo files, then edit these two in a text editor?

    @alanchrishughes

    Participant

    Alright cool, got it open now, but new problem, it won’t let me change anything.

    @alanchrishughes

    Participant

    My computer is telling me it is a PowerPoint file, I can open it with bbEdit, but POEDIT will not open it. I started going through it with bbEdit first and changed probably 20 instances already and not even an 1/8th of the way through.

    @alanchrishughes

    Participant

    Thank you. There are 4,325 lines in that file though, would I literally have to go through and change every instance of the word group?

    @alanchrishughes

    Participant

    Is there a simple way to completely rename things? Like I got this to work fine re-url’ing “Groups” to “Topics” but then it still shows up everywhere else as groups. So beside manually going through, finding every instance of the word groups, and changing it to topics, is there any other way?

    @alanchrishughes

    Participant

    I don’t think every group needs a messageboard of it’s own.

    @alanchrishughes

    Participant

    No, I want the messageboard in buddypress to work like a regular messageboard.

    @alanchrishughes

    Participant

    Why would I not? I like the fact that it is all integrated, wordpress, buddypress, and a messageboard. I wanted it to work like a regular messageboard, but when they start a new thread or comment in a thread it shows up their buddypress stream the way it does when you comment on a blog post.

    I don’t use buddypress yet, I am waiting until I can get things to work the way I want.

    @alanchrishughes

    @Peterverkooijen I don’t care what is considered a “natural” part of a social networking website, it is what I want for the website I am developing. I wanted a messageboard potentially with subjects divided into specific groups, not groups with a bunch of messageboards inside of them.

    Like I said a few posts back I realized if I just ignore the forums tab and treat the groups like a messageboard it almost works, if only you could create more than one topic in each group.
