Our Verdict

The REI Co-op Magma 15 is a premium performance at an awfully tempting price. In our tests, it displayed impressive warmth and respectable comfort in the compact package of its lightweight design that won’t break your bank account!

The bag has great insulation but it doesn’t measure up to some of the top scoring backpacking sleeping bags we’ve tested. Our testers were disappointed that its 850FP down felt less lofty than other samples in this category, making for an uncomfortable night’s slumber on cold winter trips where you need maximum warmth!

The Magma 15 is one of the most affordable high-performance sleeping bags on today’s market, but it can’t quite deliver what you’d expect from such an investment. That being said if your looking for a deal and want to get into camping or just have some extra gear without breaking the bank this could be perfect!

Performance Comparison

Warmth

With a weight of 15.9 ounces, the Magma Down is filled with quality 850 FP goose down that doesn’t quite compare to other brands in terms of loftiness but it still provides great insulation for cold weather trekking and camping trips.

The Magma 15’sEN temperature rating of 850FP seems accurate to us compared to other ratings. In comparison with Feathered Friends and Western Mountaineering bags though, the warmth appears on par with their 20 degree offerings!

Weight

The Magma 15 is impressively light for a bag that supplies this much warmth and comes with an ultralight stuff sack. Together, they’re one of our top performing backpacking sleeping bags but not quite as lightweight or compact when compared to some others on the market today.

Comfort

The Magma 15 provides a comfortable sleeping experience with its high-quality down and durable fabric. It has an ample 63″ shoulder girth that we found very pleasant to sleep on, especially for people of different sizes who often feel like they’re cramped up when laying next to each other in winter coats or summer sheets!

The bag is a little too tight for some people. The narrow dimensions at the foot of this backpack make it feel restrictive and uncomfortable to wear if you’re larger or have any intention of sprawlational activities like sleeping on your back with arms outstretched!

Packed Size

The Magma 15 is an excellent example of down insulation’s superior compressibility. We were able to pack our sleeping bag into a third-party compression sack and get it down below 9 liters!

That’s a pretty big bag for this temperature range! The included stuff sack doesn’t do much to compress the contents and you’ll need an after-market compression filler if you want full enjoyment from your minimal packed size.

Versatility

The Magma 15’s versatility is not only limited to its two-way full length zipper. It also features downpour ventilation inside horizontal baffles, but unfortunately these are interrupted by a vertical stitch along the right side of this bag which limits your ability for natural light intuition when packing up at night time or taking it off quickly before bedtime!

The Magma has some specifications that make it an exceptional bag for gas fires. The insulation is laid out horizontally, which means you can’t move anything up or down from top to bottom like in other ultra-premium bags with truly continuous baffles – but this doesn’t affect their usable temperature range at all!

Features & Design

The Y-shaped zipper on the bag offers a smooth experience and keeps your small electronics warm. An internal organizational pocket provides room for all of those pesky little gadgets you need to carry with you!

The Magma 15 is a great sleeping pad for those who want to be cozy and warm on their camping trips. It includes features like an ample neck baffle which helps keep heat inside, as well as fluffy surface that’s perfect for cuddling up with at night!

Value

The Magma 15 offers excellent performance at a price that’s just less than some of the ultra-premium models. Though it isn’t cheap, we think if you’re already committed to dropping serious cash on your sleeping bag then investing in quality will get double back from this purchase!

The Feathered Friend and Western Mountaineering bags are a great choice for those looking to pack light, but still want the benefits of carrying around something that’s going to be comfortable on their back. The Magma 15 may not seem like such an amazing deal when compared with other popular brands like Gregory or Lowe Alpine – until you start thinking about all its features!

Conclusion

The REI-Co Op Magma 15 may be a close competitor to the best backpacking sleeping bag, but it falls short in several important ways. It’s warm and comfortable as well!

However, its interruptive horizontal baffles diminish the versatility of this bag slightly and our testers think that it’s 850FP down is just a little less lofty than what they’ve seen from other manufacturers. We still really like how versatile this product can be despite these shortcomings because you’ll never know when an unexpected outdoor adventure might happen!
