Very glaud it’s wourking for youu.
@hnla – I have made so many silly oversights due to lack of caffeine that I would be ashamed to count them.
Language files are a bit of a pain to set up, but I think you’ll find that they are really nice to have once they’re in place. The command line method works fine, but I use Poedit on my machine, which allows for easy editing and does the .po/.mo conversion automatically. It really is the best way to make your customizations future-proof – even (especially) if you’re changing just one word!
@roydeanjr – Can you be more specific about the error that you get? This plugin doesn’t really affect group creation at all, since groups are essentially created by the end of step 2 (the screen where you check “Create Group Blog”) and the invitations don’t come until the end of the process. Do you have the same problem with group blogs even with Invite Anyone turned off? Exactly what does the error say?
@hnla – The tab nav string is in in the file invite-anyone/by-email.php, function invite_anyone_setup_nav(), around line 199 where it says ‘name’ => __( ‘Send Invites’, ‘buddypress’ ). I’m noticing that I’m inheriting the BP string translation, since the phrase occurs in BuddyPress core. If it would help, I can change that to the bp-invite-anyone domain, so that you could use a language file to apply the change just in that place.
As for hidden groups: I am using bp_has_groups with the user_id of the logged in user to populate that group list. Thus the Invite New Members screen should only show the groups that the user is a member of. It’s possible that you’re seeing all groups because you’re testing with an admin account. Have you verified your hidden group problem with a non-admin account?
@Erich73 – I can understand your point of view, but my feeling is that the Send Invites feature is essentially independent of groups. The way I’ve built it, it’s really an extension of an individual’s profile. Because of the way that a user’s sent invites are tracked, it makes more sense to organize things that way. At some point in the future it might be possible to include email fields directly on the group creation invite screen, but for now my plan is to leave it as it is, because it will complicate things quite a bit to handle both regular group invitations and email invitations in the same form submit.
@hnla – I think you’re right that a large part of the issue has to do with the language around the group creation process. If you examine the underlying mechanisms, you’ll see that a group is actually fully created after step 2 (the settings page), and the avatar and send invites screens are really just setup screens after the group is created. That speaks to @roydeanjr ‘s point, which is that it is possible in theory to deactivate the Send Invites page altogether during group setup, and to find another way to encourage group admins to invite people to groups.
@roydeanjr – I don’t think that the current method is causing groups not to be created in the db (because of the point I mention in the previous paragraph) but it certainly does sometimes cause some confusion with people using back buttons during the process, etc. What’d be nice is a message on each page to the effect of “Forget a step? Once you’ve finished the initial setup, you can reconfigure the group on the Group Admin tab” or something like that.
Thanks for starting the conversation, MrMaz.
I want to see BP more as a framework for social tools rather than the end-all-be-all for social networking. Like WP itself, the real power of BP is in its extensibility. (Which is what makes the conversation about the API all the more important.)
It seems to me that throughout the development of BP, there have been two directions of movement: one is to consolidate functionality (as with the recent rolling of some blog related tracking into the activity stream) and the other is to add functionality. The two aren’t inherently at odds, but they do have a tendency to fight against one another. For ease of development, solidity of platform, etc, my tendency would be to err in favor of consolidation. The discussion that was floated a few months ago about moving more kinds of content creation into the activity stream is one example of this. I’m not really 1337 enough to say what this means from the point of view of scalability, but I can say that having fewer points of input/output make third-party plugin development a lot easier.
So, I were to think of the BP toolkit as a swiss army knife, I would want BP to be the handle and maybe the big blade or two. Corkscrews, nail clippers, can openers and stuff like that are cool, but they should be options.
Glad it’s fixed! Please continue to ramble as you see fit

I just checked in version 0.5.2. One of the changes I made was to address the in_array error that some of you are seeing. I’m still not sure why the problem is arising for some people but not for others – as hnla says, it has to do with loading order, but I’m not sure where the problem is coming from. But I’m pretty sure that the problem shouldn’t arise anymore with this latest fix. Please let me know how your experience goes

In reply to: Best WYSIWYG for forumsPerhaps not the optimal solutions, but:
– https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/forum-attachments-for-buddypress/ allows users to attach files to forum posts, including pictures (which will then display inline).
– https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-tinymce/ *should* work to give basic bold/italic/link stuff for forum posts. I haven’t done a very good job keeping this plugin up with the latest BP developments, so please test in a development environment first.

@kriski – If you want to add users directly to groups (skipping invitations), try https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-group-management/. It’s not great for adding in bulk yet, but I plan to add checkboxes in the next version that’ll make it easier.
@Erich73 – Good call on the group creation issue. I think the answer is just to turn off the message for the group creation process. I’m about to check in version 0.5.2, which makes this correction. Email invitation can only be done from the normal Send Invites screen, so the confusion shouldn’t happen. Not sure about your email problem – has your friend checked the spam folder? I’m using the same wp_mail function that the rest of the BP functions use.
@roydeanjr – Very strange about the first errors – almost makes it seem like the plugin was loading before Buddypress was. If it starts happening again, please let me know, and give me as much info about your system setup as you can so I can try to reproduce it. And thanks for the kind compliments

In reply to: BuddyPress + GSoC 2010There are a few promising applications related to BuddyPress, but final decisions won’t be made until next week.

In reply to: Getting a list of users activity countAh, if you only need it once, then it’s easier. Build a list of all members
$query = "SELECT * FROM {$wpdb->users} WHERE spam=0";
$members = $wpdb->get_results( $query, ARRAY_A );Then loop through $members and do the operation that dre1080 mentions above:
foreach ( $members as $member ) {
$user_id = $member['ID'];
$args = array(
'per_page' => 10000,
'show_hidden' => true,
'user_id' => $user_id
);
if ( bp_has_activities( $args ) ) {
global $activities_template;
$count = $activities_template->total_activity_count;
} else {
$count = 0;
}
echo $user_id . " " . $count . "<br />";
}I haven’t tested this but it or something very similar to it should print a list on the screen of user ids along side their activity counts.

In reply to: Getting a list of users activity countI’d store it in a usermeta item. Write a function that gets called every time an activity item
is recorded, and increment the activity count by one. You’ll also need to write a script that loops through all your members and figures out an initial value for the user activity count. Then just use get_usermeta to get the count when needed.
In reply to: bp-default themeThe bp-default theme is not located in wp-content/themes. It is in wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes.
In reply to: Overriding a bp file not in bp-defaultThis is a perfect job for language files. See https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/
Ha, I did something stupid. I took %%SITENAME%% out of there, as it doesn’t make much sense – it’s not really a wildcard, since it’ll be the same for every member of the site – but I forgot that the filter should still be there for people who have already saved their default messages using the wildcard. I put it back into 0.5.1, but my suggestion is just to write the name of your site manually into the default text box
In reply to: New version of Forum Attachments for BuddyPress“It works!” is maybe my favorite sentence in the whole language
Great bug catches. I’ve fixed them. hnla, I think your weird subject bug is the same as techguy’s. 0.5.1 will show up on your Dashboard soon. Sorry for the annoying upgrades
Just tagged 0.5 stable. hnla, I’m going to implement your footer suggestion in the next version – I think it’s a great idea.
hnla – Glad things worked well. Making an admin-editable footer area is a really nice idea. I could also make an editable opt-out message, though it’s less obvious to me that admins would want rich control over that.
Generally, I’m happy to make fields editable by the site admin where it makes sense. But at the same time I don’t want to clutter the admin panel too much. Part of the argument for having the text strings in the plugin fully localized (which they are in this plugin! FTW!) is that users can change them to whatever they want by creating a custom po/mo.
Anton – A great idea. There are a couple things I can think of doing with the Sent Invites screen. One is to paginate it – so you only see a max of, say, 10 at a time. I could also make it sortable, by date, email, and whether accepted. That shouldn’t be too hard to do. Finally, I think “clear” links are a nice idea (“delete” seems misleading to me, especially if the invitation has already been accepted) – maybe a clear link on each accepted invitation, with another link to clear ALL accepted invitations. Might not get to it in this version, but certainly in an upcoming one.
