This should help you achieve your requirement. Pay particular attention to the code on line 78 and after to see how the images are added.

BuddyPress most likely will never solve everyone’s complex customization issues. I think the core team has done a fantastic job so far and there is going to be certain things you want in BP but it just isn’t a requirement for functionality of the software overall. Just because it hasn’t been update in two years doesn’t mean the plugin will fail to perform. Its up to you to test it on a local environment to see if it fails. Redirection is pretty simple so I would guestimate this plugin would still perform its function.
