Future viewers. My problem recurred right after I wrote this. It appears that BP and Jetpack are incompatible and cannot work together. I have turned off Jetpack for this site though that is not desirable. If anyone has any words of wisdom I will take it.

Also, if there is a developer with time on your hands that wants to tackle this problem……I have a clean site that can be used as a playground if you want to do some testing. Let me know.

All right. Everything is working now. I did NOT refresh the domain as mentioned in a prior post. Here is what I did:

    1. From wp-admin, I deactivated Jet Pack plugin.

    2. Set plugin folder back to “BuddyPress” (we previously set it to use -old suffix).

    3. From wp-admin, reactivated BuddyPress

    4. Confirmed that BuddyPress DOES work.

    5. From wp-adminm, reactivated JetPack.

    6. Confirmed BuddyPress STILL works.

There seems to be some unknown defect/inconsistency between the BP and JetPack plugins.

Note that there are other threads in this forum about JetPack problems that indicate SSO needs to be turned off. In my case, it wasn’t on, so that doesn’t seem to be the same problem.

Hope this situation and resolution helps someone else.

    Best regards! CHUCK

I evaluated BP a couple years ago and really want to use it on this new site, so I am going to try everything.

WordPress 4.9.5 running Twenty Seventeen theme. The only change to WP is that I deactivated Hello Dolly and installed Jet Pack. There are no other files in public_HTML. If you have no other thoughts, I am going to try terming this cPanel user and starting with a fresh domain, then I will install BP on WP

      without

    Jet Pack.

THANKS for getting me this far.

Yes. Renaming the plugin folder as suggested does allow access to wp-admin. Why is this? I am using a current install of WP.

This message appeared during my install/activate. Tried again, but now ALL sites on server are broken. Several people on Google are reporting broken sites due to BP.
