bp_get_total_mention_count_for_user & bp_total_mention_count_for_user should be working. The user you are testing with does indeed have some mentions, yes? The key is in the user meta table, with name = bp_new_mention_count

Yes. If you want to get a sneak peak at the admin bar support (not the buddybar), set BP_USE_WP_ADMIN_BAR to true in wp-config.php

Some of the changes you will need to make in your own theme. To start, have you turned off the BuddyPress Components that you aren’t using? Find these in wp-admin, in the BuddyPress menu, under “Settings.”
