BuddyPress doesn’t try to use any file called crossdomain.xml anywhere. What’s in your web server’s error logs, and did you complete the Forums Setup screen under the “BuddyPress” menu in wp-admin?

I think you need to fix WordPress before you use BuddyPress. I am assuming your host has disabled ini_set; research into if you can re-enable it.

Are you using BP_ENABLE_ROOT_PROFILES?

If you don’t know where you php.ini is, ask your host. Setting allow_call_time_pass_reference will prevent the error being generated (you could apply patches to your version of BuddyPress to fix the errors, but that is more involved).
