The @ mention on the member pages is always based on the user’s log-in name. I have just created a tested a new install with an admin account username of “pgibbs”, and it displayed @pgibbs on the member page.

Are you running PHP4? Links requires PHP5. If you aren’t sure, ask your host.

Do you need an external bbPress installation? I think we fixed this (or something similar) in trunk. @chestnut_jp you could always make a bug report on https://trac.buddypress.org/ so we remember to double-check it.
