Size of the translation shouldn’t affect anything.

What’s probably happened is that the site out-of-memory’d during the initial installation, so you may need to clean your database and re-install BuddyPress.

The %1$s syntax is called argument swapping and is best as it lets a translator change where a word or value is substituted to accomodate languages where sentence construction is different.

Trunk is cutting edge and will almost always be newer than the branch. This will be more true when we get closer to BuddyPress 1.3. What you comment on is an example of an enhancement that is in trunk for BP 1.3.

It ought to not break. Are you running a custom theme, widget or plugin that might rely on the groups component being active?

Your theme’s footer.php needs to call wp_footer, for example see https://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development#Footer_.28footer.php.29

Perhaps there’s a misunderstanding. WordPress/BuddyPress stores several different variations of the user’s name. When you said “username”, I associated that with the user’s log-in name. The display names, like mine here, “Paul Gibbs”, are set in BuddyPress’ member profiles.

This is a WordPress limitation, which treats user registration in the same way.
