You have to edit the database to manually activate a new user. BP will use whatever mail server settings you have configured PHP for, which may well be sendmail.

It is – in the admin backend, you can choose whether or not each component is enabled.

Well, yes. If you have an external bbPress install, you need to link to that on your site directly.

I use W3 Total Cache, without using its Page Caching feature. That simply doesn’t work with BuddyPress.
