@dorfman No, the issue is not a common one at all.
– Go to Settings > BuddyPress > Components and make sure that the Friend Connections component is enabled.
– Change to Twenty Twelve or the BP Default theme.
– If those are still missing, then re-upload BuddyPress manually e.g. s/FTP.
