I am interested in setting up a email confirmation field in the BP registration process, either instead of or as well as the password confirmation.
Does anyone have any tips?

I know this is an old thread, but I’ve been using this plugin http://buddydev.com/buddypress/allow-your-users-to-change-their-username-on-your-buddypress-based-site/ – of course the old activity items won’t update

I use this plugin http://buddydev.com/buddypress/allow-your-users-to-change-their-username-on-your-buddypress-based-site/ and point people to it after then connect with WP-FB AutoConnect

Try using this plugin https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-usernames-only/ which displays the username rather than the display name, this helps with using “@” replies and mentions.
I use this and adapted my profile pages to look like this: http://www.yeahhackney.com/members/ewebber/
You will still need a real name as well as a username

Just came across this plugin WP Better Emails https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-better-emails/ that compliments group email subscription and other notifications from Buddypress (and WP) nicely, so I thought I’d share 🙂
