I am not sure what the issue was, but I’ve just change the media settings and put them back to that they were and this started working again.

FYI – I’ve also tried to disable all the plugins except buddypress and to use a standard wordpress template (twentyseventeen), but the problem is still there.

Ok, forget about it.
The problem was that the default browser opening the activation link was already holding a session for my administrator user.
