“the plugin” = Google Maps, Google Maps all in One, BP Profile User Map

Hugo, thanks, that’s good info. Where I was having trouble was I had installed the plugin and added a user. Tested it by them adding a location i.e. home address, in the location field but nothing happened. I had thought there was some special code to embed it, hence why I was looking at short-codes.

As to the address, Nearest cross streets would suffice rather than home address. My users only need their proximity. Having finished the worpress tutorials I learned some tricks and understand .php files etc. a bit better. Still need to figure this map thing out. 😉

    Your reply helped a lot!

I forgot to mention, I also am doing a newer tutorial allowing Dreamweaver to be the customizing client for wordpress so I can build my buddypress ala dreamweaver. I’ll post my experience.

I realized my php knowledge was lacking. I signed up with Lynda.com and did a 7 hour tutorial on how to customize via php. Unfortunately there is no tutorial on buddy press but I’m hoping the knowledge gained is transferable. I’ll keep updating till this problem is solved or I solve it. So if anyone needs this information it will be documented.

This tutorial video helped in understanding short code:

So first I tried pasting this ‘Short code” into the user profile > profile fields > locations and pasted into a text box.

Fail. I’ll keep posting everything I tried. Till someone sees the error. I can’t find much documentation on how to do all of this so it’s trial and error.

I think I found a possible solution. I don’t need the exact address. Only location. Could there be a way not to ask for address of users, but nearest cross streets? That saves the identity while still being able to make a workable geo-location for maps, etc…

Yes. I understand the concerns of PiOfCube however, we should not halt progress in the name of fear. Where there is a problem. There is a solution. Would a personal login and paid membership be the answer? I have a site that HAS to have this option for what the site offers to work.

Although I’m very excited about this plugin. This test drive made me weary. Is this a plugin related error?

Although I’m excited about what Mapology has to offer, the locations tab disheartens me.

It helps a great deal. I have definitely decided buddypress is for me. I’ve built several wordpress sites and it’s a no brainer now. Sorry for all the noob questions. More to come has I dive deeper in.

    Boris,

I have a few questions. I really like what you’re offering in Shabushabu and have questions about utility.

    1. So this map can be added to each user profile to correlate to their location. Can you set it to private?

    2. On your events plugin can you set the event geo tag to correlate with the profile. Meaning if you have a profile search event, to create begin and end point for instant navigation.

    3. Is this offered to the US? I’m not sure what the prices are for us here.

    Thanks,
    Jeremiah

Hey man, I realize this post is pretty old but you all seemed very knowledgeable. I have a site idea with ENORMOUS potential and is catered around a very niche clientelle. It has the possibility of thousands of users generating thousands of posts daily. I was looking into Ning but didn’t like what you said above, however, when I looked into Buddypress it seemed lacking some of the features I need. What I need is…

Profile members. All member’s profile should have geo tags on their profiles.

An activity page that shares posts on certain pages which all members can tune into and have updated on a correlating IOS and android app (if possible).

A search for profile members that are attending an event that include their proximity to the person searching. Meaning. If I am attending an event and there are several other members that are too, I’d like to be able to see which members are near me.

I realize this is a lot so I’m posting in several places.

    All the best,

    Jeduhu

I am looking into building a social network too which would need this option. I’ll keep watching to see if this problem can be solved. I am wieighing my options on ning vs. buddypress. I really need to be able to make custom searches for profile members. Privacy search options. If this isn’t possible on Buddypress I need to find a different option.
