    @JJJ I’m not so sure the idea of a BP-core plus add-ons is the right approach. To me, the big question becomes where do you draw the line?

    As for bundling plugins, please don’t do that. “Hello Dolly” still annoys me and I still have to keep deleting it. I don’t want to see a whole bunch of plugins show up in my install. A better approach is to have a much more user friendly plugin repository. I’m anxiously waiting to see what Andy churns out for that because my biggest gripe now is there is no easy way to know what is supported/recommended.

    Oh, nope, it probably means that the code is actually checking that the field ‘username’ should be getting updated. I was sort of wondering if that would happen. ;)

    So, your question is really a WPMU question. You should try asking the question on a WPMU support site as it will likely get more response than here.

    As for the blog thing – you currently have users with no blogs. If you create a new blog for every user then what default content are you going to put on that blog for the users who have no interest in the blog? Are you going to leave the default Welcome to WP post with the comment from Mr WordPress? As a user, I’d be annoyed by that if there wasn’t some way for me to delete the blog. Oh, yeah, there is a way – don’t automatically create a blog for a user that’s not interested. ;)

    But anyhoo, I assume you have asked your user base and this is what they all want so do what you need to do.

    To me BudyPress is more about being able to build a niche community.

    You can take an existing blog/site where people comment on posts and turn it into a site where people can converse and share.

    Basic functionality that is solid is a huge must. Well documented APIs to extend the basic functionality is a high priority.

    I have to agree with @Peterverkooijen that BuddyPress doesn’t need to be everything. In fact, I sort of wish BuddyPress didn’t advertise itself as “social networking in a box” because it attracts a lot of people looking for the quick and easy way to make their “millions” a la-Facebook.

    @stwc: “social networking” is a buzzword but like all buzzwords, they have a fundamental definition. “Social networking” means community to me.

    Well, yes, you should be able to make the username field non-editable. I would assume the username field is a “textbox” type. In edit.php, you should be able to just filter out the username field and not create a form “textbox” HTML element. So, in member/single/profile/edit.php around line 21, add in a check something like:

    <?php if ( 'username' == bp_get_the_profile_field_name() ) : ?>
    // Just display the Username with bp_the_profile_field_name() and add HTML to style how you want.
    <?php else : ?>
    // Do the existing <label... code on line 23 and 24
    <?php endif; ?>

    Now, a creative user might still be able to circumvent your little hack and submit their change directly to the form. I see a nonce being used though in the form so that might not be too much of a concern after all.

    Nope, I don’t think so. I was thinking you could remove the ‘profile_group_id=1’ arg from bp_has_profile but that doesn’t seem to allow the registration page to show more groups. I guess it appears that the only “required” fields for registration are the required ones in the Base group.

    Might be worth opening a ticket on this one to see if that is the expect behaviour. Alternatively, ping R-a-y or DJPaul and see if they know.

    No worries. The code I gave should display everything except group 3 & 4. Sorry, I think I said it backwards in the previous post.

    That said, even without the code, I’m only getting group 1 showing up on the registration page so I’m not really sure what’s going on in register.php now. ;)

    f you think you can help me I sure would appreciate it. Cause I cannot figure this thing out – I have tried and tried.

    YES, I moved the bp-default theme into wp-content – themes… okay I deleted it just now AND for a second I thought I was going to lose my blog posts – it looked like it in IE – I have deactivated the plug in buddy press and the buddy press template pack – and actually deleted them from the system. I do NOT understand php, but do understand css and html – I would really like to get this thing to work with my template currently. Can you help?

    It does seem a go idea to open a new folder on my site and install my theme and wp and buddy press and buddy press theme pack – to get it to work first… however, I have a LOT of posts in my blog currently and they are permalinked all over the place . I cannot mess with the permalinks and the posts. Can I transfer them into a new theme folder on my site and not lose the permalinks – I think not.

    You know I am beginning to wonder if this thing works at all. So muc for the three step easy install. Does it work at all?

    OK, I’d rather keep this in the forums instead of in private messages because then other can benefit from the discussion if they have the same issues.

    First, it’s never a good idea to muck around with a live site. Go and install XAMPP or MAMP and setup a test/development environment on your local PC. It’s super simple. I’m doing this right now as are many of the other BP users.

    Second, Installing BP will not cause you lose any of your posts. The only reason you are going to lose post is if you delete them or you do something silly and end up corrupting your database. Go back to the first point I made – don’t develop on a live site. This applies to everything online, not just WP or BP.

    Once you have the offline test site setup with WP (make sure you mirror the setup you have online or you’re not going to have the same issues) and your current theme installed, add the BP plugin. Then add the BP Template Pack plugin and start following the directions. @Modemlooper has commented in a number of threads here about what typically needs to be done to make your theme work with BP.

    Do the work required to get your test site looking how you want it to look. On the testsite, install the plugins you currently use (one at a time to ensure none of them break BP) and make sure they work and look how you want them to look.

    Once you have that done, add any new BP specific plugins you want to run (again, one at a time) and get them looking “right”.

    Finally, go to your live site and find the Tools –> Export page. Export your live site data into a file and then import that data into your offline test site. This will allow you to ensure your existing posts/content will look OK.

    Once you’re satisfied with everything offline on your testsite, start uploading to the live site. Upload the new theme (but don’t activate it), install (but don’t activate) any new plugins required (including BuddyPress).

    Yes, BuddyPress works. No, it’s not going to work for every single user in every single possible combination of WP installations. You will need to do some work to resolve issues.

    Aw shucks. I saw this earlier today and was going to suggest it as an option.

    PS tag the topic as resolved if you’ve got it figured out. :)

    Well, you should be able to create pretty much everything you need in your theme’s functions.php file.

    First you need to decide at what point you want to populate the fields. Find a hook in the code to attach to by looking for do_action(‘some_action_hook_name’) calls. In your functions.php file, make a new function and call something like:

    add_action('some_action_hook_name','my_nifty_auto_pop_function');

    Then create your nifty_auto_pop_function that fills in the xprofile fields you want to populate.

    Look in the bp-xprofile directory for all of the different files/functions to help fill in and read profile fields.

    OK, now I’m scratching my head.

    When I create a second group, even if I tag the fields in the second group as “required”, they don’t show up on the register page (the bp-default version). The second group only shows up on the user’s profile page where they can edit the fields. They are tagged as “required” but nothing seems to force the user to fill them out.

    I’m confused now as to what you’re seeing and/or trying to do.

    @jivany

    OK. I’m thinking you can do something like this. Find this part of the file in register.php:

    <?php /***** Extra Profile Details ******/ ?>

    <?php if ( bp_is_active( 'xprofile' ) ) : ?>
    <div class="register-section" id="profile-details-section">

    <h4><?php _e( 'Profile Details', 'buddypress' ) ?></h4>

    <?php /* Use the profile field loop to render input fields for the 'base' profile field group */ ?>
    <?php if ( function_exists( 'bp_has_profile' ) ) : if ( bp_has_profile( 'profile_group_id=1' ) ) : while ( bp_profile_groups() ) : bp_the_profile_group(); ?>

    <?php while ( bp_profile_fields() ) : bp_the_profile_field(); ?>

    At this point, add in a line like:

    if( (bp_the_profile_group != "3") || (bp_the_profile_group != "4") ) :

    Then go down to this part of the file:

    <?php endwhile; ?>

    <input type="hidden" name="signup_profile_field_ids" id="signup_profile_field_ids" value="<?php bp_the_profile_group_field_ids() ?>" />

    <?php endwhile; endif; endif; ?>

    </div><!-- #profile-details-section -->

    Before the first endwhile line, insert this:

    <?php endif; ?>

    I *think* that should spit out groups 3 & 4 (assuming you have groups 3 & 4 defined in your profile groups). You might need to add in group “1” also to get the Base. The only part I’m not sure about right now is if the number need to be in double quotes or just bare. So it might be:

    if( (bp_the_profile_group != 3) || (bp_the_profile_group != 4) ) :

    I think. ;)

    @gian-ava: I think you found the problem in 1.2.3 and @21cdb just happened to find the problem when he was running the trunk version. Hence why I’ve been saying “raise a ticket”. ;)

    Everything isn’t guaranteed to be bug free and 100% working in any software. 90% of my “real life” job is fixing software bugs or explaining why we don’t need to fix them yet. ;)

    Trunk is the base SVN version. If you’re grabbing BP via SVN then you’re getting whatever is on the trunk. If you’re downloading BP via the regular channels (direct download from teh BP home page or via WP plugins), you have a released version.

    Change the name of your widget area in your child theme.

    You should be able to pretty much copy the widget area registration functions from the bp-default/functions.php file into your own child theme’s functions.php file.

    Why do you want to force blogs on your users? Give them the choice. Some people,don’t want yet another blog (like me for example – I never create new blogs on each WPMU/BP site I go to)

    Are you running WPMU? If not, you can’t provide blogs for users.

    It’s built into WPMU so all you need to do is enable the option to create a blog for new users.

    You would probably have to do something like:

    if( bp_the_profile_group != "3" || bp_the_profile_group != "4" ) {
    //display the profile stuff in register.php
    }

    You should be able to just toss that check near the top of that while loop and then remember your closing brace at the bottom.
