Cool, glad it’s resolved. Usually the best route is to check what plugins are active and even reduce one by one to see what is impacting.

It switches between show / hide using CSS yes but scripting assigns that class. I doubt that would be causing an issue though. Could you provide a link to see your theme and the issue?

https://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/ is a great article on creating a custom language file. I’d suggest seeing if that works for you as think it will.

That error will usually happen when you try and use the template pack with a theme that is already designed for BuddyPress. Are you sure that’s not what is happening?

Off top of my head I’d suggest selector CSS would be a less obtrusive method for the CSS issue:

`.directory.members…..’ and so on – you can then do styling depending on the body classes.

It all depends on ‘where’ you want the link. Are you looking to have in the themes a link back somehow or a consistent link back in sidebars?
