I done a new install of WPMU and downloaded the BP plug in through the interface and had the same problems.

I then carried out a manual install via ftp and the download from this site and it works fine now.

Is the download from here the same as the one through WPMU? Could be that the WPMU one is corrupt.

I installed it using the one click then upgraded to WPMU 2.8.6 then upgraded the BP to 1.1.3 and discovered these issues.

So, being used to Windows, I thought I would do a fresh instal. This time I cleaned all files off the server and installed using the script and left it there. So this install is using WPMU 2.8.5 and BP 1.1.2.

    Still the same issue.

The register page is redirecting with a 302 header. God knows why.

    From Buddypress settings this line:

Select theme to use for BuddyPress generated pages:

is set to the parent theme. If I select the default BP theme, it reselects the parent theme on save.

    I’m flummoxed.

I have asked the hosting tech to take a look. If they come up with nothing, I’ll try the manual install over ftp.

I am using Apache and mod-rewrite is active. In fact my host (Heart Internet) do a one click install of Buddypress. Well sort of.

I tried to update, but RC1 sits in the incorrect plug-ins directory and every time I update, I get the white screen of death and no website or blog.

    I’ll have to try again.

    Thanks for your help everybody.

I’ll read through that lot tomorrow and get on with it.

A bit ambiguous there. Do you mean to continue using the mu-plugins directory?

I’ve already done a back up. I guess the best thing for me will be to follow the original readme and overwrite files as necessary. Would you agree?

What about my active users and blogs – will they all be OK?

Just to be sure, should I continue using the mu-plugins directory?

I downloaded the zip file in March 2009. It’s 1.0 by the look of it.

    Version number:

    BuddyPress Version Numbers

    Core: 1.0-RC1 / Activity: 1.0-RC1 / Blogs: 1.0-RC1 / Friends: 1.0-RC1 / Groups: 1.0-RC1 / Messages: 1.0-RC1 / Wire: 1.0-RC1 / Profile: 1.0-RC1 / Forums: 1.0-RC1 /

Readme was in the zip and can be found here:

    http://coastalnet.co.uk/wp-content/mu-plugins/INSTALL-README.txt

What should my plan be to get the install running as currently intended? I’m a novice with database driven sites and PHP.

    From the readme file.

    **************************************************************************

Step 2: Add the BuddyPress plugins to your wp-content/mu-plugins directory

    **************************************************************************

Drop everything into the ‘wp-content/mu-plugins/’ directory for your installation.

You do not need to activate plugins dropped into this folder.

How do I fix this without breaking the current install?

    @kevinheath

Won’t that mess up my current install?

    @kevinheath

OK – I was following the readme file and it said to add it to mu-plugins.

    “mu-plugins”

Well I did try that originally but got code appearing in the text widget.

What I done in the end is to use the WYSIWYG post editor then switch to HTML view and cut and paste that into the widget.

Quite logical really. Don’t know why I didn’t think of it before.

Is there a plug-in that works?

I have done the notice to all users, but that requires people to visit the site in order to read the notice.

I have installed and used the site-wide newsletter plug in.

    Thanks for your help.

Oh – I see. I was hoping it would be dynamic.

I’m a CSS and PHP newbe, but that’s how to learn I guess.

I’m a newbe to WP, MU and BuddyPress so if you want feedback from the novice point of view, count me in.

I can only learn through experiment.

That’s a fairly standard WP message. I always ignore it and never have any problems.
