My story is not a typical one, I am not a web developer but a linguist. A friend of mine helped me out with preparing my professional website quite a few years ago but only after a few years I have discovered that there is an amazing community of truly enthusiastic and engaged people behind WordPress so I decided to join them and add my grain of sand by helping out a bit with translation and making WordPress available in my native language.
