If you’re referring to the Studio theme by BuddyDress/wpmu.org then you should know that they give free support for their premium themes. Unless we buy the theme, we won’t know what codes they have there to implement the changes you want.

I just checked fishbook, a child theme of bp-default theme with one sidebar. There should be no deterrents to getting your widgets to show up in sidebar. What if you add a “Members” widget or a regular text widget e.g. About, me? These should show up in sidebar of whole site.

I doubt that this theme (child theme of bp-default theme) will be released at all; just like the previous one (child theme of bp-sn-parent) wasn’t released.
