New install? BP version, WP 3.0?

Assuming that you’re using a child theme of bp-default, the easiest and simplest way is adding the following in your child theme’s style.css:

body.groups div#sidebar { display: none }
body.groups div#content .padder { border-right: 0px; margin-right:0px; }

“You can only update the groups you’re a member of.”
That’s the idea, one way to prevent spammers from messing with your group.

Do you mean you want to allow anyone to post status updates even in private (by invitation only) groups or only in public groups?
