You don’t have separate sites. Use the same install. Use htaccess rewrites to show a different url when on mobile and a different theme.
If you don’t care so much about the url it’s easy to show a different theme at the same url. This is the preferred method now. At one time having a dedicated subdomain for mobile was the way but google frowns on this and your links are confusing.
url.com/item should be the same url no matter what device. You just display the content accordingly.
some theme switch plugins: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=theme+switch
wap subdomain should be used for feature phones
m or mobile use for smartphones like iPhoneuse an htaccess rewrite rule and switch theme based on mobile device detection
Google it, there is alot of info on internet about htaccess and a few mobile theme switchers in wp plugin repository
you must not be placing code correctly.
try using bp-custom.php
place that file in your plugins folder
make sure you are on the visual editor
here is a function I use: https://gist.github.com/modemlooper/5042788
to use place `<?php bp_notification_badge() ?>` in your html. You will need to style it as well.

In reply to: Modifying Buddypress 1.7 BetaYou no longer need child themes. Please read this: https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-compatibility/
As long as you include the template files in your active theme you can update the BuddyPress plugin and preserve changes.
