iOS 6 is only a few months away. It will allow image uploads. However, the cropper in BP does not work. This will get fixed. Be patient, there are a lot of people contributing to bringing awesome features but it takes time.
Is your theme a custom them or BP-default? If its BP-default you have to force a width. Fluid widths without responsive layout are a small screen nightmare. Have you considered another responsive theme or BP mobile plugin?
I cant replicate the BP mobile issue. I upgraded a 1.5 site just know to 1.6.1 and did not got any errors. I suggest in the future you deactivate all plugins before upgrading BuddyPress.
A component will create a directory much like members or activity. url.com/recipes
On a users page it will have a tab recipes that list a users added content. The activity stream in my opinion should not be edited. It’s a listing of all site activity not individual content. That should be added via a component.
The BuddyPress skeleton component is an example plugin to learn the complexity of creating what you desire
It’s a different solution for a social network. Other options are great but I warn that the developer could drop support after you’ve built a site. BuddyPress will continue to be developed plus there is a growing BP theme & plugin community.
Test it out. I’m curious to hear what people say about the other options.
