In reply to: buddypress versus diaspora
Bp-Privacy plugin was just released and Bp Album + works great.
In my opinion Diaspora is a flash in the pan. BP is not going away.
FYI: I will be moving these themes out of the WordPress repo. It takes too long for BuddyPress themes to get reviewed and updated. I have a group here so you can get updates. https://buddypress.org/community/groups/citizen-kane-theme/
You probably do not want activity and profiles to be scraped by google. For one, its a users privacy invasion.
In reply to: 2nd level menuDrop downs are coming to BP 1.3. If you can’t wait search codex.WordPress.org for menus to learn hot to use WP menus. You will have to add the code and CSS yourself.
I need to update these themes. I’ll go over them in the next few days.
@stwc are you serious? You’ve been around here for awhile. Hooking into action is one of the easiest ways to add stuff to a theme. Wanna add ad block above activity stream? Just drop a function in BP-custom and attach to do action above stream. Almost evrything in BP has an do action before and after.
In reply to: user blogs without multisiteI’m creating a plugin that will be like Facebook notes. Not full blogging but a modified activity stream type thing for longer posts than status updates.
In reply to: How do I add “Sign up”/”Register” button to sidebar?`<a class="button" href="”>Sign up`
If you want an image as background change class name and add your own CSS styles
In reply to: [HowTo] Buddypress & TumblelogYou may be able to use gravity forms plugin
You can turn off the admin bar easily. codex.buddypress.org there is info on customizing components and such. Forgot activity registers blog posts from other sites.
If you install BP it will install on the main blog. It will not install on other blogs in a MU installation. You can only have it installed on one blog at a time. BuddyPress is very much tied to a theme. So if your main site doesn’t have a BP enabled theme then you really don’t even see it as you need special template files to output BP content
In reply to: What Is XProfile?Though, I think in 1.3 the avatar uploading happens after you click the confirmation link in email. This was discussed as a change not sure if it went in.
In reply to: What Is XProfile?after they sign up the xprofile fields there is a second screen that asks to upload an avatar.
It only works on one blog on a multisite installation. The login data is WP user data so that works across all blogs but the actual BP theme/ site attaches to the first blog. If you want to have is separated, like on a url community.url.com then you need to change some settings. https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/install-buddypress-on-a-secondary-blog/
In reply to: What Is XProfile?it’s the profile fields you set up in the admin. xprofile = extended profiles. Meaning you can add as many fields as you want.
In reply to: Can I go to my buddypress.org profile? It’s a bug. See if you can go to wordpress.org login and change name to not have a space.
In reply to: [HowTo] Buddypress & TumblelogThis isn’t possible with activity updates without considerable changes.the plugin BP media may allow media uploading when posting status updates. It’s a highly requested feature.
In reply to: ? re: BP themes & child themesIn the BuddyPress plugin there is a folder bp-themes. In this folder is the default BuddyPress theme. The reason to use a child theme is to not edit these files making upgrades as easy as a few clicks.
A child theme is a WordPress theme that has a parent. The child theme gets all it’s files from the parent. If you want to override a file then you copy the file and folder structure over to the child theme.
Example: say you want to ad something to the header. instead of going into the BP plugin folder and changing something you would copy the header.php over to the child theme and edit it. Since it’s a child theme it will override the same file in the bp-default folder.
Read this on how to create a child theme. https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
Another issue is if you are not using a BP enabled theme then you will have to use the BuddyPress template pack to get the corresponding files and functions working on a standard WordPress theme.
In reply to: Not enough permissions after WordPress UpgradeIf it’s a WordPress issue you need to post in https://wordpress.org/support
This site is specific to BuddyPress issues.
In reply to: Script for 2 postsNot really a BuddyPress issue. You need to read up on the loop.
In reply to: How to De-spammer a UserOn here or on your BuddyPress site? The only way I’ve been able to fix this is to go into database and remove the member. Then have them resign up.
In reply to: Do I need to install MU to run BuddyPress?when you install BP it attaches to the first blog on MU. You can tell it to attach to other blogs. So you could create a community.url.com bog and put the social (BuddyPress) on that url. Some blogs do not want BP taking over but want to add on a social aspect to WordPress.
In reply to: Do I need to install MU to run BuddyPress?Single WP will work fine. MU is only to add user blogs.
In reply to: Where to put CSS for the text widget??I usually create a new CSS file called custom.css and then add all my add-on code there. That way the theme CSS is clean and upgradable. Place the file in the root of your site and then call the CSS file in the header.
