@shawn38, thanks for for input but thats not what am loooking for , your css will only change the background to image. what i am trying to do is to add a icon to object which already has a background e.g friendship button.
I know it should be : background-image : url(
). that is what is used for wordpress but why its not working is what i dont know.

@ravedance, Go to the admin dashboard, then click on setting,then general setting, on the list where it says membership, makesure you tick anyone can register and hit save.
@djpaul, i must say a big congratulions on this new built in profile privacy, some people dont want to use BP because of privacy issue. IMO , this profile privacy will make BP much more valuable.
@juanmaguerrero, i am not a coder, but i can place code in my function.php. you can please paste the complete code with a bit of explanation because of many nobe like me.

Am having this problem aswell, i just tried solution provided by @Boone, but still same thing. i have been having the problem for a while which makes me switch back to bp 1.2
@r-a-y, can i just add the following code to my child theme function.php and define my custom css in style.css as i dont want to use default theme css.
