Yeah, we run akismet on our site without a hitch. We’ve enabled it sitewide and hard-coded in the API key. Just look in the first 20 or so lines of the source code and you’ll see in the comments where to hard-code it.

Actually, I would create a custom language file. In the end it’s much simpler in my opinion. We did basically what you’re talking about.
