Yup, I experienced the same problem today for blog posts and discovered the culprit was W3 Cache as well. I didn’t narrow it down to db.php though. Thanks!

@modemlooper I seem to remember that at one time you were working on BuddiPhone. Was that simple a BuddyPress compatible theme or did it also include reply-by-email features?

I host on RackSpace (Cloud Sites) this normally isn’t a problem ever. Do what Paul Gibbs suggests above and then increase the memory allocated for PHP by editing the wp-config.php: https://codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php#Increasing_memory_allocated_to_PHP

While I don’t have personal experience with Mingle, it makes sense that you should at least be able to migrate the userbase over. As for Private Messages, Friendships, etc. that sounds more like a job for a plugin.

Make sure though that before you do anything that you create a backup.
