@peterverkooijen – I guess it’s possible to make sure display/real names are unique, but you still run into the issue of someone having the same name. The email address is unique; you’re right.

@clivoo – The problem with using display names with the @mentions system is display names can be duplicated; people can have the same name (eg. John Smith). Usernames are unique.

@rossagrant – uncomment line 61 in bp-usernames-only.php. If you uncomment this, Welcome Pack will use the member’s display name. I might get rid of this filter, because I just uncommented it and the members directory still appears to show the usernames. It’s probably because another filter I’m using is already taking care of this. Please let […]

If you’re like me, and did not do a DB backup because you thought the upgrade would be smooth sailing (d’oh! thankfully this was only on a test install!), do the following: 1. Revert the $blog_ids variable in the bp_blogs_record_existing_blogs() function in bp-blogs.php back to this:
$blog_ids = $wpdb->get_col( $wpdb->prepare( "SELECT blog_id FROM…[Read more] -

@peterverkooijen – There are no conspiracy theories involved. If you have a solution, post it. I’ll make sure it doesn’t get deleted. — @eborg9 – the concept is quite simple. A username is something you login with, the “Name” field as mentioned here shows your real name in all places (except @mentions). The signup process is similar to […]

If you view the members directory, you’ll view people with display names:

Not true! Take a look at testbp.org and on bp.org. Every name in the activity stream is using the display name. eg. https://buddypress.org/community/members/DJPaul/ – Take a look at Paul’s activity stream. What name is displayed in the activity stream? In fact, some people wanted it the other way around (using usernames instead of display names)! […]

A default install will allow users to enter their “Name”.
eg. http://testbp.org/accounts/It’s supposed to show your “Name” across the site by default… excluding the @mention names, where in particular are you seeing usernames ?

r-a-y posted on the forum topic BP 1.2.4 – Custom BP_AVATAR_URL change in the group How-To and Troubleshooting: 15 years, 8 months ago
Your avatar URLs appear to be missing the leading “http:”. I think I remember reading about this bug before.
You can temporarily fix this by defining your BP_CUSTOM_URL in wp-config.php to:
define( 'BP_AVATAR_URL', 'http://nijmegeneet.nl/club/wp-content/uploads' );See if that works.

@ruffrazor @twob @erich73 @snark @3sixty Here’s how to set the “Forum” tab as the default in groups: I took Boone’s former code and tweaked it with a little URI trickery! Requires no core hacks and complicated function duplication 😉 Paste the following in /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php http://pastebin.com/j3n17CVe (you’ll probably need to…[Read more]

Just wanted to let people know that if you’re using BP in a subblog in WPMU and you defined a custom BP_AVATAR_URL, you’ll need to add the string “/files” to the end of your BP_AVATAR_URL constant. eg. this is what I had before:
define( 'BP_AVATAR_URL', 'http://example.com' );I changed this to:define( 'BP_AVATAR_URL', 'http://example.com/files'…[Read more] -

r-a-y posted on the forum topic How to tell if a person has uploaded a avatar only once? in the group Creating & Extending: 15 years, 8 months ago
@xberserker – yup, when you upload an avatar, it outputs two files, that’s why I check if the file count is less than two. If it’s less than two, you’ll know that an avatar has just been uploaded. You’re right that the /avatars/USER_ID/ folder gets created on the first upload.

Current version doesn’t allow you to resize videos. Next version will allow you to define a fixed width for the activity stream, activity permalink and forum posts. I’ll most likely put out a beta some time late next week.
