Did you add a “buddypress” tag to your theme’s stylesheet?
eg.
/*
Theme Name: BuddyPress Dusk
Theme URI: http://example.org/themes/dusk/
Description: Dark theme for BuddyPress.
Version: 1.0
Author: John Doe
Author URI: http://example.org/
Template: bp-default
Tags: buddypress, two-column, grey, dark
*/Notice the “buddypress” tag.

You need a “global $bp;” call if you’re going to be checking for the displayed user’s ID.
Also you might want to add the filter on $avatar_dir just in case anyone is overriding it!
$avatar_dir = 'avatars';
$avatar_dir = apply_filters( 'bp_core_avatar_dir', $avatar_dir, $object );Give it a shot!

Hi Erich, have you tried adding some code to your child theme’s header.php?

If you check the code that you just posted by itself, you’re missing a bunch of variables like $avatar_dir, $item_id, $object, which is why your code isn’t working.
Just declare them manually:
$avatar_dir = ‘avatars’;
$item_id = THE USER ID YOU’RE CHECKING
$object = ‘user’; -

What would be better is if you created a page with video and tutorials, then you could use something like this:

Do you have $avatar_folder_dir defined?
You’ll also have to make modifications on the code you copied over from bp-core-avatars.php. -

How did you install the plugin?
Can you try removing BuddyPress and re-uploading the files manually via https://buddypress.org/download ?

r-a-y posted on the forum topic How do remove the "forums" tab? in the group How-To and Troubleshooting: 15 years, 8 months ago
You’ll have to manually remove the “forums” tab from the theme’s header.php.
Also, I see that you simply copied over the default theme to your themes directory. Please create a child theme to make your changes. Read the linked article to find out why!

@dfcppnfounder – Your directory structure should look like this – “/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/”. BP files reside in this folder and not in “wp-content/plugins”.

Check out how BP checks for avatar folders in /bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php.

I just replied to a topic about Virtual Multiblog . It treats each WP blog separately – including userbase, themes, plugins, login. So you could potentially have multiple, separate BP installs running on one set of WordPress files. It does require a little knowledge of symlinks and vhosts, also not sure how things like the new multi-site […]

There’s currently no way that BP can tell if you’ve uploaded an avatar for the first time.
Actually, there is one way… BP never deletes any avatars! So you could potentially check the avatars folder and see if a user_id folder exists. If it doesn’t exist the user has never uploaded an avatar before.

r-a-y posted on the forum topic Using virtual multiblog in the group Installing BuddyPress: 15 years, 8 months ago
Virtual multiblog is in a way like MU, but different; MU shares the userbase, themes and plugins, while VMU treats each install totally separate. The reason why BP doesn’t really work with VMU is BP requires pretty permalinks and alterations to the .htaccess file; VMU doesn’t like plugins that try to modify the .htaccess file. […]

Hmm… you shouldn’t need to add this to /bp-themes/bp-default/, if you upgrade, you’ll lose your changes. Try using the same snippets in Cosmic Buddy’s functions.php and header.php.
Anyway, Cosmic Buddy is not a child theme of the BP default theme, so I don’t see why it would work if you paste it in /bp-themes/bp-default/.
