Right now my BP site (local) just goes right into the main page.
@sullyllus that happens when you go to register page while you’re still logged in. Log out first.

You really need to do a little more research on this topic because it will give you a better understanding of WP and BP. The short answer to this is Yes you need to install WordPress because BuddyPress is a plugin that extends WordPress. There is lots of info in the codex of WP and BP.
