With BuddyPress Courseware you can create a virtual class out of BuddyPress group with courses, assignments, schedules, bibliography and gradebook (solutions/assignment responses will be ready soon). @Jalien, I committed Gradebook component in latest svn revision. You might want to take a look.
Create an assignment and you should have access to its gradebook instantly.

I think it’s just the customized string, they changed Friends into Followers.

@JeffSayre, maybe that can be handled somehow by BP? Add a hook that will deactivate all the BP plugins and then ask to reactivate them manually by admin?

I agree with @boonebgorges. The concern I was following is that emails sent by BP will increase a lot with the new features and plugins that are developed so plaintext emails will be lighter to process.

If cloud server, some details about server-side software would be really appreciated, people ask a lot about BP scalability.

If you use localized version (define ('WPLANG', 'whatever_ROCKS');), comment it. Localization catalogs uses a lot of memory.
