I read here: http://bpdevel.wordpress.com/2012/06/19/buddypress-1-6-beta-1/ that BP 1.6 is supported on WP 3.4+. I had 3.3.1 installed (the one that’s in the Ubuntu 12.04 repositories). Upgrading to 3.4.2 fixed the issue.
