404 (yah, it\'s dead i know – i apologize)

Okay, so I recently reinstalled WPMU 2.9.1.1. WPMU worked great on its own, with subdomain blogs. No themes were installed, only plug in is Callum Macdonald’s “SMTP mailer” plugin, as I was unable to get WPMU to send out emails without it.

I then installed BuddyPress v1.1.3 and followed the readme/install guidelines. Domain has wildcard enabled, pointing to http://www.bp-tech.net/wpmu – and again, MU worked just fine previous. Now, all I’m getting is 404’s on *every* buddypress link.

I’ve searched for 2 days to find the solution. Read multiple topics on the forum here in regards to this, and tried multiple “fixes” that other people have used to fix the problem. .htaccess is in the MU parent, BP themes have been moved to the correct theme folder and are working. mod_rewrite has been verified as running. httpd.conf is also configured.

This is driving me nuts. Every single buddypress related link (forum, members, groups, even the blog link) returns a 404 error – and I can’t figure out wtf is going on and fix it.

I know people around here are sick of seeing these (as i said, i’ve searched and searched, seen many topics in relation to this), but I’m really at a loss here.

I’m running Ubuntu Server v9.10. Apache2, php, mysql (obvs), are all installed and running flawlessly with everything I use. Website is http://wpmu.bp-tech.net – at currently only User Registration is enabled – but please, go ahead and do whatever required to assist me here. I’m at the end of my research wits and seriously, can’t find a solution.

Thanks all – again, sorry for the repetitive post – I just really cant figure out wtf is going on here.

Hmm, just checked my SQL tables for MU. Should there be entries in there for buddypress, somewhere? There arent – if there should be.

There should be several tabes with a “wp_bp_” prefix, yes.

Nevermind – checked again – it does. I was expecting them to be sans “wp_”

Any ideas? This is driving me mad!

More troubleshooting – something is wrong with whatever/however buddypress sets the virtual directories, i think. not an expert (obviously :P) but thats what its pointing to for me.

added a blog through the admin dashboard, assigned it to the user i created. when i log in as that user, and attempt to view my dashboard/add/edit/view/manage posts, i get the address:

    http://www.bp-tech.net/wpmu/wpmu/wp-admin/?c=1

which has one extra root DIR. i tried removing the extra “wpmu/” in the URL and loading again, it reverted back to the above and showed 404.

I can’t find any directory related settings/information. But something is clearly wrong with the way mu and bp work together in regards to directory/url locations on my install, i think.

Sounds like your permalinks got messed up when installing. Try checking those and see if that fixes it.

Already tried :( Switched the links from the 4 different options and back. currently at Default, where I was originally.

Are you sure your .htaccess file is writeable? I had something similar but doesn’t matter how many times you change it if it can’t update the rules. It sounds like your rewrite rules aren’t correct but I’m definitely not an expert.

yah – me either. mod_rewrite is definitely enabled; and mu worked fine previously

    Okay – so new problem.

To test further, I deactivated the BuddyPress plugin – and still, it’s adding an extra “wmpu/” into the URL, for some reason. i seriously, have *no* idea what’s happening now.

I’ve checked wildcards with zoneedit.com – set to *.bp-tech.net > http://www.bp-tech.net/wpmu – which is the address. sooooo lost.

    ***UPDATE**

okay – fixed that. changed wildcard to just http://www.bp-tech.net and it stopped the addition of the second “wpmu/”

but still – same problem. back to all of the BP links returning 404s. i dont understand?

Not resolved, just decided to remove it for now. I’ll reattempt this install after the rest of my server-related projects are completed.

    Thanks for the input, all.
