88,000 Member Move from Ning to Buddypress… Check it out!

  • Hi all,

I plan on writing an official “thank you” post to the buddypress crew here in a week or so, but figured I would kick it off here on the forums. So… let me say THANK YOU to the guys/gals working so hard on the code and everything under-the-hood here at Buddypress.

During the next week my company will begin to move our entire Ning social network onto the buddypress platform. Our Ning site has 88,000 member so we’ve run into a LOT of challenges and a move of this size has in no way been easy.

First, we had to heavily modify our wordpress theme for buddypress (this took about two months). On top of that, we’re running a network of “sites” on the same site, under their own domains that function as news blogs within the network. So we heavily modified all of those themes as well.

Fortunately we had a smaller Ning network of 6,000 or so users that we were able to import in first and try to work out some kinks before going towards the larger network. We were able to work out a lot of the bugs through that process, but ran into a lot more over the past 48 hours while trying to import the larger Ning file.

In short, we’ve got a painful couple of months ahead of us to make all of this work, but we’re ready to switch the domain within the next 24 hours and dig in to do what we can with it. Buddypress is without question the best open source solution for this type of a move.

That said, for anyone else looking to move a sizable community from Ning to BP, it’s not easy. And without heavy modifications you aren’t going to get what you had in Ning.

    Biggest Pros:
-Ability to use Multisites to provide users with sub-domains and full scale WP blogs
-Far more customizable design and layouts due to full control over content
-Ability to use domain mapping to wrap external news blogs into the network backbone (essentially creating a true network)

    Biggest Cons:
-We lost the ability to for admins to “share” content with entire network
-We lost the ability for admins to message entire network
-We lost most of the user generated content across the Ning network and could not bring it over
-We’re forced into an environment where users must learn a new method of discussion (traditional method is gone in favor of group based discussions)

I could go on and on and I probably will in my official thank you post. In the meantime I would love to provide a glimpse into the Beta site if anyone cares to see it. I would prefer not post it in public but will send via IM.

Again, thanks to the BP community for such an incredibly powerful utility. We’re confident our new network will rival the best of the best in the BP/WP world and we’re excited to share it with all of you when it goes live!

  • Also, for those interested, we integrated OpenX ad server to create a truly robust ad network that serves trackable mixes of Google Adsense, affiliates and internally sold ad inventory. Very cool to see it all working. You can catch a glimpse of it on one of the sub-domains at http://campaigntrailreport.com

Sounds interesting and it’s always good to hear about new BP sites. Good luck with the move. Out of interest, how/what are you using to import the data from Ning?

    Cheers :)

Paul, we used the Ning importer from wpmudev. It worked great for the first 60,000 or so users. After that it began to collapse a bit. When we got it back up and running it failed to include tens of thousands of the user avatars.

Cool, can’t wait to see the results! My Import From Ning importer https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/import-from-ning/ will handle content, but it’s not really built to scale to your network size. (Though you could peek inside the plugin to get a sense of how such a scalable import could work.)

Good luck with the last steps! Looking forward to learning more.

Hey Boone, yeah we ran into a LOT of problems on pretty much most plugins as they aren’t built to handle the size of our community. Which has made it difficult in a lot of aspects as we’re sort of in uncharted territory on a lot of this.

We’re still configuring our servers before switching over the DNS so I’ll be able to post a URL for everyone to explore by Friday at the latest.

Hey guys, here’s a demo URL. (Ignore the “splash” page with map that appears if you skip the registration window. We haven’t yet removed that file and don’t intend for it to be there.)
    http://www.patriotactionnetwork.co

(Just add “m” to the end of the URL to see the Ning site)

PLEASE IGNORE THE POLITICS AS I’M SURE WE MAY NOT ALL AGREE ON EVERYTHING!

As you can see, we created a pop-up for registration. One of the cool features of the pop-registration is the auto-group assign based on state chosen. This is important because we’re trying to integrate state based “sites” on the content side of the network with state based “groups” on the social side. To see an example of this check out:
    http://arizona.patriotactionnetwork.co/

One of the biggest shortfalls of Ning was the cluttered sort of static groups that you couldn’t do much about. With BP and Multisites we’re able to create a hybrid “state hub” that has both the full website feel on the front end, with a socially engaged group behind it on the social side.

So now we’re trying our best to marry the group http://www.patriotactionnetwork.co/groups/arizona-patriots/ with the site http://arizona.patriotactionnetwork.co/ and we’re doing the same with all 50 states.

Also, here is a look at my profile and the use of activity streams to pull in content from all network sites.

Lots more to come. Have a ton of stuff to share with you guys on our experiences in doing this.
