Activation Key Problem

  • I’m having a problem where, when a new user registers, then clicks on the “Activate Your Account” link in the e-mail they receive, BuddyPress doesn’t recognize it and replies “Please provide a valid activation key.” If you try to log in with that username, it says “You haven’t activated this account yet.”
This is a new installation of BP & WP 3.3.1 on an IIS server. I’ve been testing this same set-up using MAMP and a *nix server and it works normally.
    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

  • I was having similar issues with a Linux install. Now the registrant is not even getting the email.

What does the link in the email look like?
Are you using multisite or not?
And is your site set up to use custom permalinks? Do all the other BuddyPress pages work properly? (e.g. groups, member profiles)

    Thanks for your response.
The URL in the e-mail looks like:
    (/activate is the correct permalink)
I’m not using multisite. My site does use a custom permalink setup—the same permalink setup as the other sites that are working: (/category/post-name). The other BP pages work perfectly. I checked the BP>Pages option pane to make sure that the page associations were correct, and they look fine. (I re-saved the activation page association—sometimes that works with plugins, but no dice in this case.) The value for bp_pages looks OK in the wp_options table, too.

I can see that WP/BP is inserting the activation key record in the “usermeta” table and creating the user in the “users” table, with status set to “2”. On a successful activation, the usermeta record is deleted and the user’s status is changed to “0”. That’s the part that’s not happening. I’ve no idea why. BP is able to make other changes to the database, like making groups, adding friends, etc.

    Anyone have any ideas?
