Activitation key issue

Problem (Site has the latest BP /WP installed):
1. User signs up. All ok. Checks his mail and clicks on the activation link in the mail.
2. Back on the site he gets a message, “Your account has been activated. You can now log in with your details”
3. He logs in. Log-in is successful, but
4. He’s taken to a page with the url “domain.com/activate” that prompts him with the following message:
Please provide a valid activation key.
Below this is a field with the title Activation Key. No matter what he enters there (including meticulously typing out the key contained within the activation link in his mail), he keeps getting a message, “Invalid activation key provided.
5. The problem encountered in (4) is actually meaningless, because his activation is actually successful and if he were to ignore the prompt for an activation key, he can use the site normally and won’t be asked for this the next time he logs in. It appears just the first time he logs in after clicking the activation link (in his mail)
Any help ???
