Add update status in admin bar

So I’m looking through the buddypress hooks here in the status update form file trying to figure out how I might be able to add something that would allow me to update my status from the admin bar.
Can someone direct me in the right way to finding what hooks to use and how I might about adding an update form into the admin bar?
