Adding a Subnav menu item

Hi I have seen various codes on here and I can add a link to the subnav menu but i cant get it to load the content inside the logged in area like it does when you click invites under groups.
I want to add a sub menu to the groups tab that will show all groups sitewide and not just the groups created by the user or that the user has joined.
