Adding activity stream and members list to index?

I am trying to build a child theme, and I am redoing the index.php. I would like to pull in site wide activities and members on the the index tpl, much like this page http://delicioussnaps.com/ .

Could some1 point me in the right direction?

To answer my own questions.

And the members list is a widget, but if you want to select which members to show you can use this plugin… https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-featured-members-widget/installation/
