Adding Profile Fields to profile loop

I am looking to add new profile fields, but in my case, I can’t add them through the admin panel.
More specifically, I have a profile field dropdown that will be dynamic from a database. I was wondering if there is anyway to add a profile field in a function.php or bp-custom.php. It would be great to be able to add a field into the profile field array.
