Anonymous User Comments Defaulting to Site Admin

I have tried Google and also the search on this site, which keeps taking me to the Buddypress blog for some reason, but can’t seem to find a solution to my problem.

I recently installed Buddypress on my gaming community site which was a open comment blog. Now anyone who wasn’t registered and post sometime ago is causing their comments to look as if I posted them, which is confusing.

I disabled buddypress and it fixed the problem. My question is how do I fix it so that my old user comments show as if they were posted by that user instead of defaulting to me all of a sudden?

WP/BP versions? You’re referring to comments in blog posts, correct? BuddyPress doesn’t cause this kind of issue. Change to bp-default theme and deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress to see if issue is corrected and work from there.

I’ve already done that. With only the BP plugin enabled and even using the default template for Buddypress I get all my old comments showing that I posted them and linking to my member page.

If I disable Buddypress plugin everything works fine… So that is why I assumed it was something in Buddypress…

You mean the comments are attributed to the correct posters?
You haven’t said – WP/BP versions and if is was corrected if you deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress

Sorry here are my versions. Buddypress Version 1.5.5 + WordPress Version 3.3.2
Yes if I disable Buddypress then the comments are attributed to the correct posters.
Yes I disabled EVERYTHING except buddypress and also switched to the default Buddypress theme.

This might sound like a stupid question, but how do you know that the old comments look like they were posted by you? Is it the same gravatar and user name?

    Hi Paul,

Yes it is using my Gravatar and the user name when enabled. If I disable Buddypress it uses the default mystery man gravatar and the name the poster used when writing the comment.

Does BP read off of the posters IP address by chance for anonymous postings?

    Hope that makes sense!
