Assigning data to each user in a group

Hi all,
First post here. I’m creating a website that uses groups as sports leagues. Every member of the group needs to be assigned a team. Can anyone point in the direction of the most efficient way to do this? I’m thinking I should use group meta data but I’m not sure. I’m almost certain something similar has been done before so I’m really just looking for examples. Thanks in advance!
