How do I get just the URL for a user’s avatar that also works on none BP pages.

(I want to use it for a background image.)

Just use WordPress’ get_avatar() function: https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_avatar

Thanks, but that returns the full img html. I need just the URL.

Since WP 4.2, you can use get_avatar_url. More on this discussion.

Perhaps this may work too: bp_loggedin_user_avatar( 'html=false' );
