Avatar WP administration

I have the latest Buddypress (1.8.1) installed my elegant theme ‘Evolution’. I do not see where to administrate the Avatar. I see a post to go to Dashboard > Buddypress > General Settings > Disable Avatar Uploads. I do not have a stand alone Admin for Buddypress on the left. I have it under Settings only. In the WP admin is Settings/Buddypress. In Settings/Budybress I have very limited admin with Components, Pages, and Settings. There is nothing under settings for Avatars. There’s nothing in the user profile when logged in as a member to add an avatar. I want members to change their pictures but I don’t see how. There’s no place in my admin to be sure this feature is activated.

    Thank you for your help!

Thanks modernloper you were of great help. I had the activation checked in settings but you prompted me to look at something I had not set correctly.

To spin another angle on this..I don’t want any avatars on my site at all!

OK, so I don’t upload an avatar, no sweat. But how do I get rid of the ugly text next to every instance of a user’s name which says “Profile picture of..” or “Avatar of..” – it’s really bugging me. Couldn’t this just have degraded to blank if someone didn’t upload an avatar? Why on earth do we need the text as an alt?…bizarre!
