Avatars in Signup Process

After signup a user is asked to confirm his email address. on the same screen there is the avatar creation step.
This distracts the user from doing what is most important…. confirming his email address.I know that i can disable the whole avatar step in the buddypress admin backend (General Config). But if i do that the user will only be able
do add a gravatar later to his profile. Is there a way to disable the avatar step during signup, BUT in a way that the user can create his avatar
later (without using gravatar)???Your help is aprreciated
