Avatars not working!

I have set up a new buddy press site using WP 3.3.1 and BP 1.5.4 which I have now upgraded to 1.5.5
When I try to upload an avatar (My Profile > Change Avatar) I can select an image and upload it to the server. This is confirmed by seeing the file in wp-content/uploads/avatars/1/name_of_img.jpg. I can then select the area of the image I want to crop by dragging the box around, enlarging it etc.
When I then select “Crop Image” the page reloads but with nothing different. The avatar has not been updated, and there are no error messages displayed.
When I look on the server there are no “…-bpfull.jpg” or “…-bpthumb.jpg” files created, so I think the problem is somewhere in the “bp_core_avatar_handle_crop()” function, although this is partially a guess!
I dont know the BuddyPress system particularly well, so any insight into this would be really helpful!
