Blogs Directory throwing and “operand types” fatal error

    @jimgroom

    Hello,

I have seen this issue arise a few time on the forums, though no clear resolution that I can make out. I recently got BuddyPress working with WPMu’s Multi-DB setup (thanks to D’Arcy Norman posts here: http://www.darcynorman.net/2009/06/25/buddypress-and-multidb/) and everything is fine save the Blogs Directory which is throwing the following error:

Fatal error: Unsupported operand types in /home/umwblogs/public_html/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core.php on line 985

I have seen that some folks link it to the themes, plugins, or even a time zone issue, none of these seem to be the case for me. You can see the error in action here:

    http://umwblogs.org/blogs

And if anyone has some feedback or potential tips that would be much appreciated.

    Best,

    Jim

You shouldn’t be getting an error if you are using a recent version of bp. Not sure exactly when this got introduced but the current version give out an error message like this ‘[Adjust Time Zone]’ in place of the invalid recent activity date.

    From this thread: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=2437#post-13341

The problem is you need to adjust your time zone. :)

For the "time since" to work correctly, the timezone setting
for your root blog has to match the time on your server.

You can change it under "Settings > General" in your /wp-admin/ area.

    Hey Burt,

I am using bp 1.0.2 and I checked the timezone, and I am not sure that is the issue. What seems the issue is a number of the blogs in our WPMu account are a number of years old, and some haven;t been updated, it seems like a fail is coming in that regard. The fact is it only chokes on blogs that haven;t been updated for some time.

We are still looking into this, but in the interim we comment out the bp blogs activity code in the blogs directory loop and the blogs directory index.php and that solved the problem, at least cosmetically and functionally.

Sounds like a problem with blogs that don’t have a ‘last_updated’ blogmeta entry, which would be old blogs. I’ll look into it if you can post a bug.

If nothing else, a plugin could be made to force update the old blogs which would bypass the issue entirely. That same logic can be applied to the core also to prevent any other plugins from running into the same hiccup.

Thanks for the clarification, i will post a bug report—and i have to say I am loving the Buddypressification of UMW Blogs. Adds a whole ‘nother dimension!
