BP compatible theme on child site in WP Multisite.

I’m building a WordPress Multisite network with WP 3.5.1 and BP 1.6.4. On the main site I understand the need for the theme to be BP compatible but is that necessary on the child sites as well? Maybe I haven’t configured it correctly, but my experience has been that all of the BP functionality resides in the main site and whenever a user wants to access groups or activity or any of the other BP pages they are redirected to the main site. My preference would actually be that the users could stay in the child site to access BP functionality but I haven’t figured out how to set that up. Barring that, do I really need BP compatibility on the child sites?
(I hope I haven’t committed a forum error here. I also asked this question in the troubleshooting forum but haven’t received any replies and this is very urgent. I only have a few days to get this site up and running for a client.)
